Art Lovers Book Club (free and open to all)

Saturday, January 28, 2-4pm

“The Devil in the White City” by Erik Larson.

Guest Speaker: Alan Banks, Supervisory Park Ranger of the F. L. Olmsted National Historic Site

Presentation: The Life & Artistic Contributions of Fredrick Law Olmstead

Bringing Chicago circa 1893 to vivid life, Erik Larson’s spellbinding bestseller intertwines the true tale of two men–the brilliant architect behind the legendary 1893 World’s Fair, striving to secure America’s place in the world; and the cunning serial killer who used the fair to lure his victims to their death.

As the father of landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted and his firms designed the American landscape at the turn of the 19th century. Olmsted’s most notable projects are the U.S. Capitol grounds, Central Park, the Buffalo and Boston park systems and the 1893 World’s Fair.

Guest Speaker: Alan Banks, Supervisory Park Ranger, oversees the historical interpretation of Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site in Brookline, Massachusetts. During the last 20 years he has researched and developed a variety of landscape walking tours, slide lectures and presentations on the Olmsteds and their work. He was a featured speaker at Wellesley College’s Davis Museum as part of their Viewing Olmsted exhibit and was highlighted in the Boston Globe for his walking tours of the Boston Park System. In 2010, he was invited to speak before the Appalachian Institution at Biltmore Estate in Ashville, NC and later that year could be seen in the documentary The Olmsted Legacy on PBS. Alan also has served as an Olmsted consultant on various projects including working with Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art on their Art on the Emerald Necklace exhibit and Olmsted’s Landscape Art, a traveling photographic exhibit created in cooperation with the Emerald Necklace Conservancy. He also recently worked with National Geographic Magazine and was lauded for his “insightful interpretation” of Olmsted’s work in Boston. Legacy Magazine published his article Interpreting Cultural Landscapes: Turning the Inside Out. Working with the National Register of Historic Places he produced Boston’s Arnold Arboretum: A Place for Study and Recreation as part of their Teaching with Historic Places program.

A open discussion of Near Andersonville by Peter H. Wood and images from Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory by Harold Holtzer & Mark E. Neely, Jr.

Guest speaker: Historian Francis X. Daly, Jr.; 2pm – 4pm

Near Andersonville by Peter H. Wood

The admired American painter Winslow Homer rose to national attention during the Civil War. But one of his most important early images remained unknown for a century.

The renowned artist is best known for depicting ships and sailors, hunters and fishermen, rural vignettes and coastal scenes. Yet he also created some of the first serious black figures in American art. Near Andersonville (1865–66) is the earliest and least known of these impressive images.
